God desires a relationship with you. No matter where you are in your faith journey, God invites you to regularly seek Him through scripture and respond to His commands.

The Discovery Bible Method is a great way to study the scripture in a practical and accessible way as an individual or as a group.

You can pick a book of the Bible to walk through from our suggestions on this page. They are grouped from introductory books to more theologically challenging. Choose a book that would be appropriate for most of the people in your group.

You could also choose to walk through the scope of scripture through a biblical survey. Follow the suggested reading plan below for a rich and broad view of God’s Word.

You can structure your group or individual study in this format:

BEGIN IN PRAYER

• Adoration - Praise God for His character

• Confession - Confess when we come up short of God’s best for us.

• Thanksgiving - Thanks God for his presence and provision in our lives.

• Supplication - Ask God to meet the needs in our community, our church, our group, our families and our personal lives.

• Ask God to reveal a fresh insight, and ability to understand His Word.

READ

• Slowly and thoughtfully read the passage from God’s Word.

• Have someone in your group summarize what the passage is about. Briefly discuss it with your group and fill in any gaps.

• Read it again out loud. Notice a word, phrase, or verse that stands out and write it down.

REFLECT

• As a group, discuss what the passage says:

• God—What does this passage say about God?

• People—What does this passage say about people?

• Obedience—What does this passage say about obedience?

RESPOND

• I Will—What is God calling you to do? What do I need to change?

• Share—Who needs to hear this?

CLOSE IN PRAYER

• Pray that God will remind us of what we have learned and help us to follow Jesus as we go.

• Thank God for our group, His Word, His blessings, and His gracious presence in our lives.

Read these five guidelines to the group to help frame the discussion for the first few weeks.

• Everyone shares briefly so others have room to speak.

• Focus only on what this passage is saying, as opposed to other passages.

• Focus only on what this group is seeing.

• Give people time to respond. Silence is OK.

• The facilitator should facilitate discussion, not necessarily teach.

• Keep the session on task and complete all sections, though not necessarily all questions.

• Prepare before by studying passage, looking for main idea, and think of some examples, stories or applications from your own life.

• Respond to questions by asking group, “What in the passage helps us answer that question?”

• Respond to distracting comments by asking, “Where do you see that in this passage?”

• Respond to “strange” answers by asking, “Help us understand what you are thinking.”
